Communication: The Art of Giving Feedback - In-Person / Virtual

A 1-hour instructor led training session that combines lecture elements with a variety of engaging elements like Q&A, group discussion, as well as polling and chat functionality when delivered virtually. Constructive feedback is a powerful communication tool that provides an opportunity for professional and personal growth when delivered respectfully. However, when the feedback is overly critical, without sufficient detail, or emphasizes subjective opinions, it can become counter-productive. Using a combination of lecture, group discussion, and case study application, this seminar provides participants with a basic understanding of the importance of providing praise and constructive feedback at work and in personal relationships, the barriers to effective feedback, and foundational communication tools that can improve relationships and workplace productivity.

This session will offer demonstrations of generative AI (genAI) tools with the goal of empowering student agency in learning. Presenters will share practices and demonstrate the usage of generative tools including ChatGPT and CoPilot (formerly Bing AI) in enabling students to learn how they can be iteratively applied to facilitate learning and skill development. This session will have two parts: Part 1 of this demonstration will highlight the AI Tutor by Contact North, specifically how students can use this tool to further their learning, how faculty can use it to decrease workload, and how it can be leveraged as a teaching assistant or study partner. Recommendations are based on ongoing faculty practice. Part 2 of this demonstration will highlight CoPilot on mobile and desktop devices, specifically how learners can combine prompting and voice input/output to interact dynamically with the tool. This flexible approach lends itself to multiple diverse applications and is based on practice during the Fall 2023 semester.

What is Trauma-Informed and why would you want to be trained in this practice?

What is Trauma-Informed and why would you want to be trained in this practice? What if you could make a shift in your perspective that would help you in all the thousands of personal interactions you have every day? What if you could enter every moment with more understanding and empathy? Looking under the hood at what is behind all our actions opens the door to more meaningful relationships and stronger connections in every sphere of life. Trauma-Informed Training explores the way our brains perceive, process, and respond to stress of all kinds – from the seemingly insignificant to the profoundly overwhelming – and what this does to our bodies and behaviour. The goal of this session is to learn more about the full-day training and to leave with a practical strategy, or two, for creating supportive relationships and productive interactions at work, at home and in the community.

Creating new opportunities for peer-to-peer professional learning: Teaching Triangles & Squares!

Teaching is often perceived as an isolating practice that happens behind closed doors – but it doesn’t have to be! In the Fall 2023 Semester, we piloted a new Professional Learning (PL) opportunity for faculty: Teaching Triangles & Squares. Teaching triangles (3 people) and squares (4 people) are opportunities for self-directed peer-to-peer professional learning through guided observation of teaching and feedback dialogues. In either scenario, a small group of peers engage in a structured, non-threatening process of planning, conducting, and reflecting upon formative (low-stakes, learning-oriented) teaching observations to inspire growth in one's teaching practice. Please join us for a facilitated panel discussion, in which we will share our reflections on process, lessons learned, and new inspirations for teaching! Teaching Triangles & Squares are an innovative way of working together, as educators, to inspire growth in our collective teaching practices. New approaches often come from looking outside for inspiration, and this is one example of a new opportunity to work towards teaching excellence together! You may leave this session inspired to engage in this PL opportunity!

Mental health in the undergraduate nursing classroom: A photovoice study with Faculty Response

The nursing shortages throughout Ontario have shone a light on how difficult it is for nurses to maintain their mental health while being constantly overtaxed in the workplace (Dyer, 2022). In order to raise up a generation of nurses who are able to withstand the stress of nursing while also advocating for workplace safety and work-life balance, undergraduate nursing programs need to provide educational experiences that model a balance between achievement and positive mental health. However, undergraduate nursing education can be a stressful experience (Aloufi et. al, 2021; Reeve et al., 2013). Many mental health interventions that address this target the student, providing them with additional resources that may increase their coping or their resilience (Aloufi, et al., 2021; Windle & Kim, 2021). However, there may be ways in which the undergraduate nursing classroom itself can transform to be more supportive of student mental health while still achieving (or even improving) its educational aims. The study being presented is a continuation of Phase 1, in which undergraduate nursing students took photos which represented ways in which classroom experiences affected their mental health. During phase two, we collect responses to the photos from the public and from nursing educators. This has allowed us to consider the issues raised by the students' photos in a way that encompasses more perspectives. Opioid Overdose Awareness and Substance Use Stigma Seminar

The drug overdose crisis in small Ontario towns recently hit the news when the mayor of Belleville declared a state of emergency in February 2024 after 17 overdose victims were hospitalized in a 24-hour time period. During the same time, Kingston Public Health reported a 15% increase in overdoses during the previous week, and other small communities in the province reported similar trends. In fact, from 2016 to 2023, over 50,000 people died in Canada from opioid-related causes, reaching record high levels. Although this rise is attributed, in part, to increased levels of opioid cross-contamination in many other street drugs, opioid overdose can happen to anyone. In this seminar, participants will learn about what an opiate overdose is, its prevalence, and myths about who is at risk. Participants will also learn how to recognize signs when someone is experiencing an overdose, what Naloxone is, and how you can get a life-saving kit for free. The problem of drug overdose is expected to grow over the next few years. It is imperative that as many people understand the issue and know what to do. This seminar will be facilitated by Mark Barnes, Pharmacist & Owner of Respect Rx Pharmacies, an engaging educator who passionate about stigma-free approaches to addressing addictions and drug use.

Silencing Your Inner Critic - In-Person / Virtual

A 1-hour instructor led training session that combines lecture elements with a variety of engaging elements like Q&A, group discussion, as well as polling and chat functionality when delivered virtually. Is there a little voice in your head that often says to you: “What a dumb person you are!” or “You won’t do it right, so why bother!” or “Either I get that new job, or I’ll be stuck in this one forever!” Your inner “Critic” is that voice – the one that is all-to-ready to berate, criticize, and demean you. If your “Critic” is not managed, it can rob you of feeling good about yourself. Strong self-esteem – the value and worth you put on yourself – is an attribute that enables you to succeed at work and in relationships. In order to have healthy self-esteem, it’s important to confront the “Critic” and change the language of that internal voice. There are many strategies that can help people develop healthy self-esteem. NOTE: This seminar does not cover dealing with criticism from others.

The Creation of an Indigenous Resource Library

As a faculty, the School of Nursing acknowledges the need to incorporate Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being into our curriculum, our culture, and the nursing care our students will take out into the workplace. However, many of us struggled with the challenge of not knowing how to grow our own knowledge in this area. As a result, we developed an Indigenous Resource Library to facilitate our faculty development. In this session we will present the opportunities and challenges that we faced in creating our library. We will present the current status of the library and provide a template that will allow of expansion and replication in other disciplines. Participants in this panel discussion will have the opportunity to ask questions and consider how a similar project might benefit their discipline. *This scholarship is being shared in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Contemporary Educator Program (CEP).

Futures Thinking: Artifacts from the futures of higher education

Thinking about the long-term future can be difficult because it is too abstract and too ambiguous. However, it is critical to engage in that long-term thinking exercise, since the choices we make today will shape the futures that are possible. To support that long-term thinking capacity, the Research and Foresight team at eCampusOntario have designed “artifacts from the future of higher education” which is based on the trends synthesized in our foresight reports. Artifacts from the future are imaginary objects designed by extrapolating possibilities from the patterns of change we see today. They are created to give a “tangible” experience of what a possible future could be like. Artifacts from the future are intentionally provocative; their purpose is to spark critical and creative conversations and reflections about future possibilities. In this workshop, participants will be able to explore four different artifacts that represent educational technologies that could exist in the future and, by 2034, could be as mainstream as the LMS is today. Then, participants will play a game designed to spark critical and creative conversations to explore a broad spectrum of implications that the artifacts from the future may present for the post-secondary education sector and its stakeholders. Please note that articipants are asked to bring a device that can connect to the internet in order to play the game and access the session materials. This session will only be facilitated in English (even though the Artifacts are available in English and French).

Harmonizing OneHealth, Student Well-Being, and Indigenous Wisdom: A Two-Eyed Seeing Approach

This session aims to interlace the principles of One Health, the holistic well-being of students, and Indigenous ways of knowing, through the lens of Two-Eyed Seeing. This integrative approach encourages viewing the world through both Indigenous and Western knowledge systems, fostering a richer, more inclusive understanding of health and well-being. Participants will explore how One Health's interconnected view of human, animal, and environmental health can enhance student well-being by promoting an understanding that our health is inseparably linked to the ecological and animal health around us. This perspective not only broadens students' awareness of health determinants but also cultivates empathy and a sense of stewardship toward the planet. Integrating Indigenous ways of knowing, participants will delve into how these rich knowledge systems contribute to a holistic view of health, emphasizing balance, interconnectedness, and the importance of relationship with the land. Indigenous wisdom offers profound insights into well-being that encompass spiritual, emotional, physical, and environmental dimensions, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding health. The concept of Two-Eyed Seeing will be central to this session, guiding participants to appreciate and apply both Indigenous and Western lenses in addressing health and educational challenges. This approach not only enhances problem-solving capabilities but also fosters inclusivity, respect, and a deeper connection to the diverse worldviews of students. By the end of the session, participants will grasp how the synergy of One Health, student well-being, and Indigenous knowledge can transform educational environments, creating spaces where students thrive holistically and are empowered to contribute to a healthier, more sustainable world.

Creating a great family life - In-Person / Virtual

A 1-hour instructor led training session that combines lecture elements with a variety of engaging elements like Q&A, group discussion, as well as polling and chat functionality when delivered virtually. In the past, the definition of family seemed to fit into a neat little box; there was mom, dad, the kids, and the extended family. This traditional definition is no longer sufficient to describe this social institution, as the definition of a family is significantly broader today than it has been historically. This seminar explores today’s family life, which can often seem complicated and challenged by circumstances such as divorce, a feeling of lack of time, poor communication, and competition from electronic gadgets. Participants will have the opportunity to see that, despite these issues, it is possible to build a great family life.

GenAI in the Classroom: No Place in Third Space? - In-Person / Virtual

It is commonplace for us to turn our classrooms into a third space. Ideally, we invite students to bring their prior knowledge and experience (first space) with them into formalised discourse (second space) to engage with others and create new understandings and construct meaning together. Generative AI is an instance of this blending of spaces that we have yet to fully tap into. GenAI has quickly become a significant part not only of industry but also of our personal lives. Students are becoming conversant with these tools on their own. Perhaps because these tools are viewed as having the potential to displace learning, the digital literacy skills involved in using GenAI continue to be underdeveloped. If education is truly to be responsive, we need to continue the tradition of making the classroom a third space by incorporating GenAI. In this session, participants will be invited to delve into guided GenAI activities and explore applications of the tool in their own teaching practices according to the principles of third space. They will begin strategizing ways to incorporate GenAI in their lessons to transform the classroom into a space where students’ versatility with the tools and how to use them responsibly and ethically can be formalised. Participants are asked to please bring their own device to this session.

Improving the international student experience: How SLC UX students worked with the City of Kingston to identify issues and generate ideas for change

This session is showcasing the results of a partnership between UX students and the City of Kingston during the Winter 2024 semester. Through intensive research, our students identified key issues faced by international students in six critical areas (Employment, Financial Planning, Health Care, Housing, Immigration Support and Transportation). Leveraging these findings, Design Thinking sessions were conducted at the International Student Symposium. These sessions helped generate ideas on how we can collectively improve the experiences of our international students. In this presentation we will share an overview of our methods, list what the top issues were for each category, and share what ideas were generated by a collective of students, city staff, and community partners.

Innovation and Collaboration: Integrating Student Learning and Community Need

Services for children diagnosed on the autism spectrum (ASD) have changed across the past 7 years as a result of many factors, including the reform of the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). Now more than ever, students need to graduate from college with immediately applicable skills as there is an ASD provider shortage in Ontario. To increase access to meaningful active learning experiences, the Autism and Behavioural Science program at SLC partnered with the A. Britton Smith Centre for Behavioural Studies to launch a student run clinic for children with autism in the local area to provide support with certain skills (e.g. communication, social skills, problem solving, emotional regulation etc.). This innovative learning experience was delivered over 6 weeks, during which time clinical services were supervised by program faculty and associated staff from the A. Britton Smith Centre for Behavioural Studies. This session will detail this innovative approach to course-based, hands-on learning which was immersive and generalizable to real-world applications. Participants in this session will have the opportunity to workshop opportunities to generate similar immersive learning experiences centered around appropriate student skills, faculty expertise, and SLC resources.

Belonging in Practice: A Case-Study Approach to Application

Belonging is widely recognised as an essential part of the student learning experience, and it has increasingly come to be prioritised by higher education institutions. The term frequently appears in EDIA statements, strategic plans, intercultural dialogues, and so forth—it is not just a buzzword. While it can be viewed through different lenses, at its core Belonging can be defined as a subjective feeling of being welcome, respected, included, and valued, regardless of who you are. As post-secondary educators, we acknowledge how significant this can be for student success in our courses, programs, and post-graduation. However, we do not always know how best to put this important phenomenon into practice. This session aims to facilitate conversations about how we as educators embody Belonging in a variety of environments and interactions on campus. The participants will be given a working definition of Belonging, the application of which they will first brainstorm through a space-based activity. Insights from that discussion will then be applied to case studies to reinforce the feasibility of strategies, innovative approaches, and adaptability. The space-based activity and case studies will address potential loci at varying hierarchical levels, such as the classroom, office hours, virtual spaces, the program / curriculum, and the strategic plan. This is not only to demonstrate how pervasive Belonging is but also to underscore how fostering it is a holistic effort. As a group, we will discuss the possibilities presented by the teams and think through ways in which we can implement the suggestions.

Creating our future together through permaculture and produce sharing

As a daughter of two immigrants from the Netherlands, I lived a somewhat stereotypical life filled with plants and gardens. From the age of 5, I began working with plants in our family greenhouse. It was here I learned the joy of growing flowers and vegetable plants and the importance each holds. After recently purchasing a 103-acre farm in South Dundas, I began looking into creating a more sustainable life that may support my family and our neighbours. Don’t worry! You do not need 103 acres to do this. In this session, participants will learn more about permaculture, garden shares and plant pairings and will leave with seedlings or a seed packet.

The session will share findings from a research study, consisting of interviews with twenty international students, undertaken by two SLC professors. The study seeks to better understand the motivations of international students taking programs at SLC. A Canadian understanding of academic success which is typically individualistic, transactional, and teleological may not be aligned with international student perspectives. There is growing awareness among faculty who teach in programs with a high number of international students that they may have different and diverse reasons for attending SLC. Understanding their perceptions and motivations more fully may help faculty and administration understand the “why” behind international student’s academic desires and inform and guide strategies to help them progress towards their goals. Participants will learn more about international student perspectives and experiences at SLC. *This scholarship is being shared in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Contemporary Educator Program (CEP).

Navigating the Landscape: An Investigation of SoTL across Ontario Colleges

At SLC, one of the many ways that we are investing in our creative future(s) is through Research and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). As Educational Developers in SoTL, we are collaboratively building infrastructure to support SoTL advancement within our institution over the next few years. As a first step to inform our work internally, we looked externally to describe the current landscape of SoTL activities across the college sector, beginning with an environmental scan of Ontario College publicly facing websites. In conducting our environmental scan, we aimed to answer the following questions: (1) What does SoTL currently look like in Colleges across Ontario? (2) Who are leading SoTL initiatives? (3) How are Ontario Colleges engaging stakeholders in SoTL? (4) What are the most common SoTL initiatives across Ontario Colleges? (5) What key literature/evidence is being cited to inform SoTL practice? Locally, our findings will inform decisions about the development of SoTL frameworks, supports, and programming, and opportunities for networking and learning from our counterparts. Next steps could include expanding our search to describe SoTL activity across a sampling of colleges nationally. While it is not our intent to compare SoTL activity across colleges and universities, analysis of our descriptive data may yield future questions about SoTL advancement specifically for the college context.
