Investigating What Academic Success Means to St. Lawrence College International Students

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The session will share findings from a research study, consisting of interviews with twenty international students, undertaken by two SLC professors. The study seeks to better understand the motivations of international students taking programs at SLC. A Canadian understanding of academic success which is typically individualistic, transactional, and teleological may not be aligned with international student perspectives. There is growing awareness among faculty who teach in programs with a high number of international students that they may have different and diverse reasons for attending SLC. Understanding their perceptions and motivations more fully may help faculty and administration understand the “why” behind international student’s academic desires and inform and guide strategies to help them progress towards their goals. Participants will learn more about international student perspectives and experiences at SLC. *This scholarship is being shared in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the Contemporary Educator Program (CEP).
