The session will focus on language and cultural challenges in the academic classroom for students whose first language is not English. We will have a panel of students who will discuss various issues in the classroom such as, professor feedback, accommodations in the classroom, and issues surrounding plagiarism. Students will share their authentic experiences navigating language challenges within educational environments. We will explore the gap between perception versus the reality of students. The discussion will be summarized and participants will be given a resource on some best practices to support students, focusing on some principles of UDL. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges these students face in the classroom and uncover some practical strategies to bridge the gap and how to enhance support for students. Staff from the Academic Support Centre will be available near the end of the session to share information about new initiatives and supports for multi-lingual students.
