It is commonplace for us to turn our classrooms into a third space. Ideally, we invite students to bring their prior knowledge and experience (first space) with them into formalised discourse (second space) to engage with others and create new understandings and construct meaning together. Generative AI is an instance of this blending of spaces that we have yet to fully tap into. GenAI has quickly become a significant part not only of industry but also of our personal lives. Students are becoming conversant with these tools on their own. Perhaps because these tools are viewed as having the potential to displace learning, the digital literacy skills involved in using GenAI continue to be underdeveloped. If education is truly to be responsive, we need to continue the tradition of making the classroom a third space by incorporating GenAI. In this session, participants will be invited to delve into guided GenAI activities and explore applications of the tool in their own teaching practices according to the principles of third space. They will begin strategizing ways to incorporate GenAI in their lessons to transform the classroom into a space where students’ versatility with the tools and how to use them responsibly and ethically can be formalised. Participants are asked to please bring their own device to this session.
